Many
companies now use electronic scanners and computerized databases
and retrieval systems to efficiently manage applicants' résumés.
In response to these changes, you should produce a plain-text version
of your résumé that looks ordinary and drab, (Not meant to look
attractive) but may be submitted
to a data base or scanned easily and accurately. Make your résumé
“data base” and "scanner-friendly".
Do
NOT use any of the following:
Bullets |
Lines |
Boldface Or Underlined Text |
Borders |
Different Font Sizes And Styles |
Columns/Tables |
Graphics |
Shading |
Photos |
Handwriting |
Coloured Paper |
Italics |
Make
it easy for Employers to reach you.
Be certain that your résumé lists your current address, phone
and cell numbers, pager, e-mail or web page.
If
there are other ways to reach you, (e.g., a phone number for messages,
Recruiter’s or office phone number) show that too. Make sure your
phone has an answering machine, and that it has a professional greeting.
Carefully
check the spelling and accuracy throughout your résumé. Have a friend
or employment counsellor check it as well.
Fill
your résumé with "buzz words" (i.e. specific hardware
or equipment, operating environments or software applications; technical
jargon; relevant acronyms; make sure that acronyms are spelled out in
full): This will improve the chances of your résumé "matching"
the database inquiries used by recruiters to find suitable skills
sets for job opportunities..
Highlight
any computer skills: List in detail the hardware platforms, programming
languages, operating systems and application software you have been
exposed to, even if you are not an "expert" in each.
